LINDA CARONE DEBUTS BLACK MOONLIGHT
May 18 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm$20
“Plenty of jazz vocalists have great voices. Many of them explore the treasures of the Great American Songbook. Linda Carone gets full marks for both and makes it all infinitely more interesting by interpreting far from exploited gems from the jazz/blues oeuvre, going right back to the 1920s. Who knew there were so many relatively under-heard tunes? In the hands of a wonderful singer and a first class team of players, these old songs perform the seemingly contradictory feat of blasting new life into an established genre.”
Mark Rheaume – CBC Radio
Introducing Toronto’s Linda Carone, a jazz and blues vocalist, a niche song stylist and interpreter of now-vintage popular music from the 1920’s and beyond. With a voice that’s been described as ‘beautiful, rich, sultry and provocative,’ Ms. Carone’s raw, natural and diverse approach to music has shaped her vocal style in a way that is playful, intimate, and unpretentious.
In celebration of Linda Carone’s debut album, Black Moonlight, she will be putting on an unforgettable and unmissable performance at the historic Jazz Bistro. George Koller, producer and bass player extraordinaire, has curated an all-star band to accompany Ms.Carone’s expressive voice known to caress lyrical phrasings often lost in today’s interpretations.
Linda Carone comments: “Music is timeless. If it’s a forgotten song that one has never heard before, then it’s considered new. Recreating the sound of an era is not my goal – I discover songs that I love and transport them into the present. People who’ve heard me sing will say I seem to find the right songs that suit my voice, but that I don’t necessarily sound like any other singers from any particular era.”
Although content with making music for jazz traditionalists, Linda would love if younger audiences could discover her unique sound. ‘Young people are being exposed to the revival vibe and as long as it’s out there, they crave it’. This involves deep research into brilliant gems rarely performed or recorded which Linda has been digging and collecting over time, before carefully selecting these tunes for Black Moonlight.
