BERNIE SENENSKY QUINTET: MOE KOFFMAN TRIBUTE

July 7 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm

$15

The late great Moe Koffman is undeniably one of our greatest national treasures. His Canadian and U.S. success in 1958 of his recording of “Swinging Shepherd Blues”; established his name internationally as a flautist and helped to popularize the instrument in jazz. In the mid-1960s he made more than six appearances as a soloist on NBC Television’s ‘Tonight Show With Johnny Carson’. He played, toured, and recorded with a lengthy list of jazz stars that included Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Dorsey, Charlie Barnet, and Doc Severinsen, and in hundreds of television and recording studio bands. Moe Koffman was one of Canada’s true jazz icons, and in recognition of that, was awarded the prestigious Order of Canada in 1992 honouring his outstanding talent and dedicated service to the arts.

Gifted composer, arranger, and conductor in his own right, the brilliant Bernie Senensky began occupying the piano chair in The Moe Koffman Quintet in 1979 when the band was the number one small jazz combo in Canada. He had played with Moe on occasion prior to that and “was always impressed with his utter musicality and his complete mastery of the flute, alto and soprano saxophones”.

As part of The Moe Koffman Quintet, Bernie ultimately had the opportunity to contribute many of his own compositions to the band’s repertoire for more than 20 years. He continues to keep the memory and the music alive today with his celebrated Moe Koffman Tribute Band, featuring Koffman’s grandson Jake Koffman on saxophone, the internationally acclaimed jazz flautist Bill McBirnie, trumpeter Jake Wilkinson and veteran members of The Moe Koffman Quintet – the talented bassist Kieran Overs, and Order of Canada member, drummer Terry Clarke.
