ELIZABETH SHEPHERD AND YVETTE TOLLER
January 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm$15.00
Two of Canada’s finest jazz artists join forces for a night of fresh, soul inspired, hip sounds. Elizabeth Shepherd (vocals, piano) and Yvette Tollar (vocals) will draw on a collective wealth of repertoire from their JUNO nominated albums alongside brand new, yet to be released material. They are joined by Cuban born trumpeter, Alexander Brown.
Elizabeth Shepherd burst onto the international scene in 2006 with the release of ‘Start to Move’. Since then, the four-time JUNO nominee and two-time Polaris-Prize nominee has been featured on BBC, J-Wave (Japan), WBGO (New York), NPR and Deutschland Radio.
She has played sold-out shows at the Cotton Club (Tokyo), The Jazz Cafe (London, UK), has shared the stage with such greats as Christian MacBride and Branford Marsalis, and was personally invited to open for Jamie Cullum at the Hollywood Bowl in 2009. Her 2014 album ‘The Signal’, featuring Lionel Loueke was on many international “Best Of” lists, as has been universally hailed as a masterpiece.
Her much-awaited new project, MONtreal, is a 12-song ode to her hometown and its deep-seated jazz roots. The album will be released in Canada and the US in October 2018, and in Europe in March 2019.
One of Canada’s leading modern jazz vocalists, Yvette Tollar possesses an unmistakeable, velvety tone that will make the hairs on your neck stand at attention. Critics have called her singing soulful, effortless and sincere. A powerful performer, her lyrical delivery is brimming with maturity, wit and a wholehearted devotion to the sentiment.
Her most recent album, Ima, was nominated for a JUNO Award in the Best Jazz Vocal Category.
She has recorded and performed with celebrated jazz, world and pop artists such as Mary Margaret O’Hara, Sheila Jordan, Elizabeth Shepherd, Kevin Breit, Michael Occhipinti’s Shine On – The Universe of John Lennon, Rinsethealgorithm, Dominic Mancuso, Maryem and Ernie Tollar, The Merlin Factor and Robi Botos. A familiar face at jazz, world and folk festivals across Canada, Tollar has also performed internationally with appearances in Europe, South America and the USA.
Yvette is currently recording her latest project – a collection of Joni Mitchell’s music with inventive, jazz and world music inspired arrangements.
