STEFAN BAUER – VOYAGE WEST
September 15 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm$15.00
STEPHAN BAUER – VIBRAPHONE, JIM VIVIAN – BASS, GREG RITCHIE – DRUMS, CHRIS BACUS – TENOR AND SOPRANO SAXOPHONE, TAMMY SCHEFFER – VOCALS
Vibraphone virtuoso Stefan Bauer brings his extraordinary five-piece ensemble, Voyage West, to the Jazz Bistro for it’s Canadian debut.
The music of Voyage West is contemporary jazz beyond boundaries. It celebrates and reinvigorates the Great American Songbook, contrasting it with original music that contains “romantic and impressionistic elements . . . and magnificent sounds full of fantasy” (Udo Spelleken, Rheinische Post). Voyage West takes the audience “on a ‘voyage’ from intimate and delicate to wide and orchestral, and from high intellectualism to deep emotion, a journey shared between American-infused Modern Jazz and a kind of ‘world music’ that cannot be found on any map . . .” (Heinz Braunsmann, Westfälische Nachrichten).
The rich, rarely heard voice of Bauer’s spectacular 5-octave marimba is but one unique source of instrumental color; the actual voice of Tammy Scheffer – often the source of haunting, wordless melodies – is another. “When Tammy sings counterpoint to Chris’s soprano saxophone,” says Bauer, “it can sound like two saxophones weaving an intricate sonic web.” Jim Vivian’s propulsive bass and drummer Greg Ritchie’s drive and colors tie it all together.
“The goal,” says Bauer, is to create music that “draws the audience along with us as fellow explorers on a borderless journey – both sonically and culturally.”
Since its first performance at the International Jazz Festival Moers, Germany, the original, Europe-based Voyage (Voyage West in North America) has played the Jazzkaar Festival (Estonia), the International Jazz Festival Hamm (Germany), and been featured live on the WDR, Germany’s biggest radio station. The ensemble celebrated the release of its second CD, GEOGRAPHIA, with a highly acclaimed, 14-concert tour of Germany in 2014.
