September 6 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm EDT$10
Opening Night of the Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival: www.tujazz.com
The Toronto-based ensemble explores themes and motifs from works by writers ranging from 18th-century essayists to 21st-cetnury TV writers, using improvisation as a vehicle for building narrative. Formed in 2016 by bassist/composer Wesley Collett-Taylor, and featuring some of Toronto’s finest young musicians the project draws on the traditions of jazz, folk, and funk music to create unique moments of sound and story. Their first single, And The Ports Have Names For the Sea was released online in 2017, and their EP Port Cities is slated for release at the end of 2018.
The Sophia Smith Quartet:
The Sophia Smith Quartet combines a mixture of traditional jazz elements with original modern jazz compositions to create a unique blend of memorable melodies, lush harmony and improvisation inspired by the compositions of Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter and Pat Metheny. Sophia’s warm alto saxophone sound lends to the feel-good vibe of her compositions as she creates music that leaves audiences uplifted. Meeting at Humber College in Toronto, the quartet features a diverse group of musicians including Iranian-Canadian piano player Amir Mehrabi, Calgary/Toronto drummer Jacob Wutzke and Guelph-raised bass player Sam Fitzpatrick.
