Genevieve “Gigi” Marentette: The Music of Don Francks

November 20 @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm

“A lovely muse of music… a femme fatale from film noir… jazz improvisation at its best… an honest little girl with a great sense of humour that the world’s been waiting for. That’s Genevieve ‘GIGI’ Marentette.” – Don Francks

Vocalist Geneviève “Gigi” Marentette celebrates the music of her mentor and friend Don Francks — the legendary actor, poet, jazz musician, and activist. Don’s blessing for Gigi to carry his songs forward has become a touchstone in her career. In 2017, she recorded his previously undocumented ballad “While There’s Still Time” with George Koller and Steve Hunter, a song that now holds a special place in her repertoire.

This concert continues her tribute to Francks’ artistry, blending his original compositions, and daring arrangements that reveal his wit and humanity. Over the years, the piano chair has evolved through the hands of Steve Hunter (who transcribed and arranged much of the material), Bernie Senensky, and the late Stacie McGregor, and is now carried forward by Michael Shand — alongside George Koller and Ben Wittman.

Intimate, swinging, and deeply personal, this evening is both a celebration and a continuation of Don Francks’ legacy.
