$20Jim Lewis – Trumpet
Peter Lutek – Reeds Tom Richards – Trombone Avi Granite – Guitar Neal Davis – Bass Ted Warren – DrumsAbout The New Album
Seasoned improviser, composer, and guitarist Avi Granite delivers an adventurous album of his
original compositions with his mainstay Toronto-based project Avi Granite 6. After their critically
acclaimed release Orbit (2018), the group presents perhaps their most succinct and focussed
studio recording to date, Operator.
Operator is about perseverance in the face of disruption, connectivity, communication,
otherness, and what brings people together.
The group navigates Granite’s compositions with a relatable sensitivity, finding improvisational
launchpads at every turn, while retaining clarity of ensemble unity. From the energetic opener
Crushing Beans, to the soaring ballad My Sunken Ship, a funky Ubiquitous Miles, and the
grinding of The Long Tomorrow, Operator takes the listener on a diverse journey through the
group’s thematic explorations.
The recording finds the six in top form as they recorded Operator fresh off of a tour in Nov.
2019. Stunted by the pandemic, the album finally comes to light and is scheduled for release on
Friday, Feb. 24 2023 on Pet Mantis Records as part of a winter release tour.
Bio
The Avi Granite 6 is a Toronto-based neo-jazz project. The group performs the music of
Canadian guitarist and composer Avi Granite. Though Granite has called NYC home for the
past decade he has continued to compose for and work with his long-running Toronto-based
project the AG6.
In November of 2018, the group toured Canada celebrating the vinyl/digital release of Orbit. With
the help of the Canada Council for the Arts they finished the tour by going into Revolution
Recording in Toronto to record their upcoming release, Operator.
Highlights for the group include a performance at the Montreal Jazz Festival, their song “Life
Fragments” was featured in CTV’s “Saving Hope” TV series, and their CD “Red Tree” garnered
a 4-star review in Downbeat magazine.
The Avi Granite 6 began in 2005 as a larger ensemble for its leaders’ compositional exploration.
Granite has composed more than 70 original pieces for the group exploring his own cultural
heritage, improvisational constructs, self-expression, jazz tradition, and love of film music
